Always, choose a place that is sustainable and that invites the body into opening rather than pushing or coercing. Support yourself in any and all ways that are needed so that the body may fully surrender in these shapes. (1) Approximate a shape and find your edge (where there is enough sensation, but not too much and not too little either). In Yin, we are not only targeting the meridians, but also the connective tissue of the tendons, ligaments, fascia and bones etc. As always we are here to motivate you to get to your mat and find internal and external balance. Try them at home or join Heather in one of the yin practices focused on these channels. Heather is demonstrating some yin poses below to help balance the Liver and Gallbladder meridians. Spring time and Wood season is a time when we can most benefit from a Liver-focused practice to shed some stored stress, anger, and frustration so that we can make quick and wise choices towards our goals. Perhaps you have noticed that hip openers will often elicit feelings of frustration, annoyance and anger. In Yin Yoga, any sequence that includes hip openers and twists may stimulate Liver and Gallbladder meridians, energetic pathways through which Chi flows internally. This can encourage assertiveness, decisiveness, and movement. They are decisive and know exactly when to make a move and when to hold back. Confident and creative they also possess great humility and can “grow” patiently around any obstacle to reach the “light” or the object of their dreams. The balanced wood type always sees a challenge as an adventure and enjoys pushing themselves to their limits whilst performing well under pressure. The Balanced Energy of Wood is expansion, growth and movement. The Liver and Gallbladder organs are essential for our body’s capacity to process both physically (detoxification) and emotionally. Impulsiveness points to excess Gallbladder Chi, whilst indecisiveness is attributed to a deficiency. These two organs together see the truth to make wise decisions. When Liver Chi is stagnant a deep state of anger and frustration ensues. The Gallbladder is known as the Wise Decision Maker, it knows when to store and when to release bile and is thought to moderate rash behavior. In Chinese Medicine the Liver is responsible for maintaining balance in the whole body and creating a smooth even flow of Chi and blood throughout. In the body, Wood is expressed through the Liver and Gallbladder organs and their associated emotions are anger and kindness. The Daoists believed that our emotions are rooted in the organs and that harmony can be restored by balancing the energies of the organs. Wood symbolizes new beginnings - life and growth and marks the first element in a 5-element cycle.Įach element within the cycle nourishes, controls and is also inspected, thus creating a universal system of checks and balances that can be observed both externally and internally. The rapid exponential growth seen all around us in the form of blossoming trees and the numerous plants now breaking the surface of the earth epitomizes Wood energy according to Chinese Medicine.
